Almost all of us feel sometime or other, that we deserve more respect than we get from others! I used to feel that way decades ago. Then one day I thought of my mother's advice,
"Gopi, you can not demand respect, you have to command the respect by your own behavior!"
Since then I am constantly reminded of my mother's advice.
There are only two rules when it comes to respect:
- Respect is like the "right of way" (while in driving school), always to be given, never to be taken!
- When in doubt, refer to Rule No.1
Instead of demanding respect from others, let us start giving our respect to others unconditionally. It should be with no conditions attached. When you respect another person it defines your character, and it has nothing to do with the other person. Every one regardless who he or she is deserves our respect.
Respect must be the first rule of engagement with another human being on this planet! It is our honor to hold every one in high esteem! When you are busy, respecting others you have no time to worry about others respecting you! But surprisingly you will start receiving more respect than you can handle! This is the magic of giving! What you chase will elude you! But what you elude, will chase you!
